Revolutionizing Coating Processes at Irthlingborough Lock: A Sustainable Approach with Specialist Painting Group and JN Bentley

In partnership with JN Bentley, Specialist Painting Group (SPG) effectively showcased the advantages of adopting a more efficient coating removal, surface preparation, and coating application process. This innovative system is designed to function outside traditional ambient conditions, offering increased flexibility. As a result of its demonstrated efficiency, the Environment Agency awarded a work package utilizing this new approach. Third-party inspections were implemented, with all involved parties closely monitoring and assessing the impact on program timelines, quality, costs, and most importantly, risk.

Historically, the Environment Agency (EA) relied on abrasive blast cleaning for the refurbishment of its extensive portfolio of steel structures. However, this traditional method posed several risks, including contamination of land or watercourses, large volumes of hazardous waste generation, exposure of workers to harmful substances (particularly lead), reduced annual output due to high costs, and delays from plant rental expenses during adverse weather conditions.

Specialist Painting Group introduced the EA to the use of RPR heat induction technology for safely removing existing coating systems. This process is followed by mechanical preparation and the application of a coating system that relies on ambient humidity for curing. This innovative approach has been successfully implemented for other major clients, including EDF, Network Rail, PepsiCo, and Natural Resources Wales.

Key Benefits of the New Coating Process:

  • Increased refurbishment capacity: More refurbishments completed annually, enhancing operational efficiency.
  • 40% project cost reduction: Significantly lower expenses compared to traditional methods.
  • 99% reduction in hazardous waste: A cleaner, safer process with minimal environmental impact.
  • 50% reduction in project duration: Faster project completion times, improving overall project delivery.

By leveraging this advanced method, the Environment Agency has set a new standard in steel structure refurbishment, demonstrating a clear commitment to both sustainability and operational excellence.
