London Eye Substructure Refurbishment: SPG and Red 7 Marine Enhance Protection with Interzone 954 Coating

SPG (Specialist Painting Group) partnered with Red 7 Marine for the comprehensive refurbishment of the London Eye substructure, located beneath the iconic attraction in the Thames River. Exposed to the fluctuating tidal conditions of the Thames, the carbon steel substructure required enhanced protection to withstand its challenging environment.

Using a specialized floating platform, Red 7 Marine and SPG accessed the substructure, employing powered access and a tender during low tide to ensure safe and efficient operations. The existing coating system had suffered significant deterioration, with numerous areas experiencing complete failure.

To address this, the project team executed thorough mechanical surface preparation, including the abrasion of areas where the original coating system remained intact. After proper surface preparation, the team applied Interzone 954, a high-performance, modified epoxy protective coating system designed to safeguard the structure against further environmental damage.

This collaboration ensured that the London Eye substructure received the advanced protective treatment it needed to endure the demanding conditions of the River Thames, prolonging the lifespan of this vital component of the landmark attraction.
