Successful Restoration of Volvo Footbridge with Highways-Approved Protective Coating

Specialist Painting Group Ltd was honored to collaborate with VolkerLaser, representing them on behalf of Kier Highways, for the A404 Volvo Footbridge restoration project. The task involved the meticulous removal of the existing coating system and the application of a specified, Highways-approved protective coating system, ensuring long-lasting durability and protection for the structure.

To achieve optimal results, an abrasive blasting technique was employed to remove the redundant coating, meeting the stringent visual cleanliness standard of BS EN ISO 8501-1, SA 2.5. This method was chosen for its efficiency in preparing the surface for the new protective layer, ensuring full compliance with the required standards.

Located in Brentwood, Essex, this six-week project was conducted after the footbridge was removed from the A404. The entire work was carried out within a controlled encapsulation to maintain optimal climatic conditions during the application process, safeguarding the quality of the coating system.

Highways England’s specifications for the protective coating were adhered to, following the guidelines set out in Highways Specification Series 1900. To ensure the highest standards, independent coating inspection services were provided by the reputable Hampshire-based Paint Inspection Ltd.

Successfully completed and delivered by Specialist Painting Group Ltd on behalf of VolkerLaser in late 2019, the Volvo Footbridge restoration project stands as a testament to the team’s expertise in high-quality highway infrastructure maintenance and protective coatings.
