How Protective Coatings Are Specified
A protective coating system is only as good as its specification and the way it is applied. Every project starts with the substrate, the environment the steel will face and the service life the asset owner needs. Those factors determine the level of surface preparation, the type of coating and the number and thickness of coats.
Surface preparation is assessed against recognised standards such as BS EN ISO 8501-1, which describes the visual cleanliness grades steel must reach before coating. Depending on the structure and its surroundings, preparation may be carried out by abrasive blast cleaning, mechanical methods, UHP water jetting or RPR heat induction.
Once the coating is applied, inspection confirms that film thickness, adhesion and finish meet the specification. Our coating inspection services give clients independent evidence that the work has been completed correctly. Where assets also need fire resistance, our passive fire protection team can advise on intumescent systems, and our corrosion protection specialists can help plan long term maintenance.
