HB41 Cable Bridge: Refurbishment of a 1939 Structure at Finchley

Specialist Painting Group completed the refurbishment of the HB41 Cable Bridge at Finchley, a vital piece of infrastructure constructed in 1939. The continuous three span structure carries essential London Underground service cables over the Northern Line tracks, just north of Finchley Central station.

About the HB41 Cable Bridge

Cable bridges rarely attract attention, but they carry the services a railway depends on. If the steelwork deteriorates, the cables it supports and the trains running beneath are put at risk. Keeping a structure like HB41 in good condition is therefore about protecting the operation of the railway as much as the bridge itself.

After more than eight decades in service, the bridge needed its protective coating renewed to preserve its structural integrity and extend its life.

Refurbishing the HB41 Cable Bridge Over the Northern Line

The refurbishment involved the complete mechanical removal of the existing protective coating system. Removing the old coating fully, rather than painting over it, means the new system is applied to sound steel and is not undermined by a failing layer beneath.

The steel was then prepared in line with the specified British Standards. Surface preparation standards set out how clean the steel must be before coating, and meeting them is essential if the coating is to bond properly and perform as designed.

Minimising Disruption to London Underground

Throughout the project, the team worked to keep disruption to the surrounding environment and to railway operations to a minimum. Work above an operational line demands careful planning of access, protection of the track below and strict control of materials and waste.

The refurbishment is now complete, leaving the HB41 Cable Bridge protected for the years ahead and continuing to serve the London Underground network.
