Chartek

Specialist Painting Group Ltd have spent the November training with International Paints technical team on the practical aspects of the Chartek epoxy passive fire protection application.

We have spent 2015 working with International Paint on gaining our Chartek company license and individual applicator incenses for our ICATS engineers and coating inspectors.  Chartek is a recognised and commonly specified system designed to protect steel structures against hydrocarbon jet and pool fires for up to 3 hours.  EPFP products are sprayed using plural component equipment due to the viscosity of the material and short pot life when base and catalyst are mixed together.

When spraying any EPFP product we use the WIWA Duomix plural component pump system. The system is designed to heat the material, reducing the viscosity of the product which enables the sprayers to achieve a fan pattern. Plural component equipment also keeps the base and activator separate until entering the block where it is mixed before reaching the spray gun.  This means can work with materials that cure rapidly when mixed together.

When applying any PFP product it is important to work in a team of people each with a specific task. Chartek has a quick cure time so it is vital that each member of the PFP application team knows their particular role in the application. From the pump operator and applicators to the mesh installers and sprayers, each member is relied upon to keep the process moving on any PFP application.

Chartek's HK-1 mesh being installed mid-coat. The glass and carbon fibre mesh is installed to retain the carbonaceous char contained within the Chartek during a hydrocarbon jet and pool fire. Our engineers have extensive experience in the application of both glass fibre and galvanised steel mesh reinforcement.
